Constant spamming, weirdness across platforms, the lack of decent plugins (youtube embed, etc). These are all things that have been bothering me with what I have loosely titled OLF2.
Since we abandoned Proboards in search of greener cyber-pastures, this forum has been the best ordinance available for the things OLF is great at, but alas it is not perfect....yet. You see, the open source software that is the digital backbone of of our happy little home -SMF- has been in development for some time now and it has finally reached v2.0. With v2.0 comes new and improved spam countermeasures, a fully integrated modification engine, and some other good-and-plentys that will assist the admins and the mods in their daily labours.
In the next few months I will be rolling out changes -possibly significant and temporarily inconvenient ones- that will bring OLF into the modern age. I'm letting you all know that these changes could possibly make posts disappear or service to halt. It could however also be seamless and without any pains. I'll be sure to try to keep things accessible as things happen and will keep you all informed!
But rejoice my friends! The third coming of OLF is upon us, and lo how it does promise much!

This sounds exciting! As commented above, thanks for your labours. Directive0, I was wondering if you could comment briefly on the state of OLF funding. Glancing at your bookkeeping, it makes me a little nervous to see your balance ratcheting downwards... Is your revamp to OLF3.0 going to include any changes involving revenue generation? (e.g. advertising or other...) You guys going to pass the hat at Board Meeting? |

Hi Nate! I'm glad you're keeping us honest!
The funding IS ratcheting downward, but I'm not too concerned. I will be accepting donations at the board meeting and we have some local companies who I am awaiting payment from for our next month.
OLF 3.0 may require additional small expenditures to install (still checking on that) but it's operation will not. It should perform just as SMF does now. I WILL NOT BE ADDING ANY AD-REVENUE MODIFICATIONS TO THE SITE INITIALLY, but I won't be ruling them out entirely in the future.

More is happening! We purchased our block of space on the new VPS we will be inhabiting soon! Prices should be a lot lower now, which is good news for everyone!

Since I have a life outside of OLF, I suspect it will be a long time yet. For anyone who visits you can see it doesn't even LOOK like OLF yet. I'll keep you guys informed when there's more to see! Cheers  |
