You don't need it but it really does help for drop thrus. It helps pervent pressure cracks that occur mostly in drop thrus.
IMO they're really useful and can make your board last a little longer, but you don't need it, but it's nice to have

Why not go to stoneheaven area. There's a pretty big hill on ivebridge or go that road that's parallel to it, by the magna center. they look pretty damn steep to me, but i've haven't got the balls to go down..yet...
